Mountain Bike Slick Tyres
If you ride predominately on the road, using slick or semi-slick tyres instead of off road knobby tyres is a great way to obtain extra speed from a mountain bike.
Slicks come in different sizes, but we think between 26 x 1.5" - 1.9" provides a good mix of speed and durability. A narrower tyre can be faster, but will tend to wear more quickly. Slick tyres have no tread on them and thus have low rolling resistance.
Semi-slick tires have little or no tread in the center of the tire but have knobby teeth on the sides, so if you are riding both on and off road, the semi-slick mountain bike tires afford you low rolling resistance but also traction while cornering. |
