A tent is the single most important camping gear you will purchase, as it is your main source of shelter. Tents come in a huge range of prices, sizes and styles so we have listed below the features we believe are most important when buying a tent.
Features Size - Begin narrowing down your search for a new tent by thinking about how many people will be sleeping in your tent on the majority of your camping trips. This will dictate the size of the tent you need. If there is two of you sharing a tent you might find a 3 person tent more comfortable as you will have space to spread out and store your gear. Alternatively buy a tent with extra storage space outside the tent, you will notice this feature in many of Velogear's tents. You may also want to check out multi-room tents. If your camping with kids, a 2 room tent provides a little privacy.
Ventilation - Opening a tent with a vent at night will help create some air circulation and eliminate condensation inside your tent.
Vestibule - A vestibule is a sheltered area, usually an extension of the rain fly. It provides an undercover area to store wet/dirty gear.
Waterproof - Even if you are camping only suring summer it is always safe to buy a waterproof tent. There is nothing more miserable than sleeping in a saturated tent. It is also important to seal the tent's seams, as the seams of a tent are the most vulnerable point for water leakage.. Buy some sealer or wax leak and treat all the seams very often. Some tents are even supplied with taped seams. Seam taping results in maximum protection against the natural elements at all points of the tent.
Set up time - You must also consider how easy/difficult it is to put up and take down your tent, especially as you may have to do it in the dark, wind or rain.
At Velogear we have sourced a diverse range of high quality tents. Our tents range from 2 people to a large family of 6. All Latrekking tents are quick and easy to set up, waterproof and offer some sort of vestibule and ventialtion.
Tips to prolong your tent life Never store food in your tent, and never eat in your tent. The smell of food alone will tempt animals to tear into your tent to get to it. When you return from a camping trip, set your tent up in your backyard and air it out. This will help prevent mold and mildew. |
