Buying a bike tubes is easy. You just need to know what size and type to get. Like tyres, tubes are sized by diamter and width, the first number being the diameter. The exception here is that tubes have a range of widths they can accomodate (for example - 26" x 1.75/2.1 means that the tube fits a 26" tyre that has a width anywhere from 1.75" to 2.1").
Here are our basic tips:
Presta versus Schrader valves Rims come with a certain size hole that only one valve type will fit correctly in. Thus, depending on what type of rims you have, you will need to buy tubes with the corresponding valve. Presta valves (French valves - FV) are tall and thin. Schrader valves (American valves - AV) are the same as the valve in your car.
Check your size Read the sidewall of your bike tyre to determine the exact size of your tyre. Make sure when choosing your tube that your bike tyre fits within the tube width range.
Please note Keep in mind that you can run a wide tube in a narrow tyre, but you cannot run a narrow tube in a wide tyre.
Tubes wont last forever even under the best of circumstances but keeping in mind the use and making sure your getting the right tube for your tyre will increase it's longevity.
How to instal your tube: 1. Remove the wheel from the bicycle. 2. Using a tyre lever, pry one entire side of the tyre off the rim. 3. Remove the old tube and check your tyre for any damage. Find and remove the object that caused the flat if necessary. 4. Insert valve stem of the new tube into the rim hole and loosely screw on the rim locknut (if applicable). Place tube evenly inside the tyre and inflate it slightly until just round. 5. Work tyre bead into the rim and with the help of a tyre lever carefully seat tyre on the. 6. Slowly inflate the tyre making sure the bead is properly seated on the rim and no part of the tube is pinched between the bead and the rim. If this occurs, delfate the tube and reset the tyre bead. 7. Finally - Inflate to proper tyre pressure (as recommended on the tyre sidewall). Do not over inflate!
