“Countryside Biking with dinner” Review by demi
Rating
My husband and I did a private countryside biking tour with Hanoi Biking Travel, along with dinner at the owner's home afterward. We had a memorable and adventurous experience.

The communication on booking up front was brief and minimal, so it concerned me a bit. It shouldn't have though. Our guide, Tinh (Tony), arrived on time at our hotel and everything went as expected. He was laid back, friendly, and provided us with great info throughout the tour. Hue, the owner, is just a lovely person. Such a sweetheart and a driven business woman.

You need to be feel very comfortable on a bike, be daring since you are maneuvering in the traffic, and be in pretty good shape. This was not a leisurely bike ride. It was hot and strenuous. We probably biked 18-20 miles, if I had to guess.

Tinh weaved us in and out and across the crazy Hanoi traffic with ease. He's an expert at it. What a rush to be part of traffic. I had a permanent smile on my face as we started. I was so scared but at the same time, exhilarated. We stopped at the Opera house for a quick peak, went over to the mosaic wall, over a bridge, and into the countryside.

In the countryside, we stopped for some refreshments and also walked around a temple. We rode through small villages and enjoyed saying "hello" to all the children we passed. It was dark outside by the time we headed back to the city. This did make me a tad nervous since we didn't have any lights on our bikes. I would suggest the owners invest in some reflectors and a small front and/or back bike light as a nice safety precaution for these night time circumstances. Once we were back in Hanoi, we stopped for some fresh coconut water. It was much needed and delicious. We were worn out and a sweaty mess.

Finally, we arrived at Hue's home. I thought we were going to have time to go to our hotel to freshen up first, but I guess there wasn't any. I really wish I could have had a shower before being a guest in her home. I felt bad because I knew I smelled and looked disheveled. Her family, in no way at all, made me feel self conscious though. It was all my own insecurity.

Dinner was simply wonderful. Hue put out an amazing spread for us. She and her family were warm, welcoming, and so gracious. They offered us a couple varieties of "happy wine", to which we happily obliged to try. We also were given cold beers throughout our visit. The conversation never stopped, and Hue was open with us about her life experiences. It was a dinner I will always remember fondly.

If I had the chance to do it again, I would book the city tour instead, something that had some cycling around the West Lake area. There were some areas of Hanoi I didn't have the opportunity to see, and I know now that I would have preferred staying closer. This is simply a personal preference. When you bike to the countryside, you basically have to bike on interstate/highway type roads a good chunk of time before you get to the countryside. It didn't leave anytime to stop in any of the villages or markets - perhaps that was only our experience though because maybe we weren't fast enough cyclists! Stopping more to view the local life would have been something that would have enriched the experience for me. It was certainly a fun, crazy ride that I'm glad I did, but I now think I would have just preferred to have stayed just biking in and around the city.

If you like biking, I highly recommend you book with this company, and whatever tour you do with Hanoi Biking, absolutely make certain you add on the dinner at Hue's home. That is a must!

This is one of the best tours I have ever done whilst travelling. I was alone and grouped up with another couple and with Donny the tour guide we set off. After a couple of minutes realised the traffic looks scary but everyone rides/drives with a respect for others. Perhaps, unbelievably, it is more intimidating viewing from a taxi. It was fun from the start. We cycled across the Long Bien (Eiffel Bridge-French period) and were transported to the countryside of rice fields, sugar cane drinks, banyan trees and oodles of heritage culture and amazing history. Our lovely guide was amazing with his input and knowledge of Vietnamese history and passionate with his love of his country. I learned so much in a relaxed fashion. The ride is flat and fairly easy and only the year old bridge to negotiate a gear change. That is my style of cycling. We returned to the Old Quarter for a delicious lunch in a restaurant full of character and plenty of food to share. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. I have only been here for three days but so happy I found time for this and if I returned again I would happily to it over again. When paying for the tour I booked for tomorrow for a cooking class and am sure it will be as fun and enjoyable as today. Book now!
“Wonderful biking tour” Review by landsnk

My husband and I took the countryside biking tour with our guide, Chuong (Gary). We didn't realize when we scheduled the tour that we would actually begin in the heart of Hanoi and bicycle out to the countryside. Chuong guided us carefully through the Hanoi traffic and out of the city. All told we biked for probably 4 hours on excellently maintained bikes and mostly level terrain. After returning to the city, we were taken for a massage, and then to the home of the company owners for a home cooked dinner. Chuong was full of info about his country and its history and what better way to experience the real Viet Nam than to dine with these wonderful people in their home. Hue made us a wonderful dinner. I highly recommend this company for their personalized attention. I hope they continue to do well in their business. My favorite memories from that day: navigating Hanoi traffic, the countryside scenery; the flock (?) of ducks making their way down the middle of the road and everybody just moving out of their way; riding past all the school kids as they all yelled "Hello" (HAY-LO!!); and Hue's delicious dinner and inviting hospitality.
