Lisa Mathison is a dynamic mountain biker from Brisbane, who began her career as a cross-country cyclist at the age of 13. Pushing herself to achieve her dreams, this shy city girl immersed herself in the sport, learnt quickly from those around her, and rapidly rose through the junior ranks to earn her chance of competing at an international level. By the time she was racing in the Under 19 category, she had demonstrated how her extensive range of technical skills could be combined with her focus and determination to deliver remarkable results. In 2002, Lisa realised one of these dreams becoming Australia’s first cross-country Junior World Champion in her first attempt. Reinforcing her strength and capability, she successfully defended her title in 2003, becoming a dual World Champion.

As a result of her immediate success, she was offered a scholarship at the UCI International Cycling Centre, the first Australian to be offered this prestigious opportunity, training under the guidance of legendary Swiss ex-Pro Chantal Daucourt, at the UCI headquarters in Switzerland. Her development as an all round cyclist throughout this year saw her competing on the international stage on dirt as well as on the road, exposing her to different cycling disciplines for the first time. Lisa’s racing and focus developed even further in this unique environment and her results throughout the next few years are testimony to this.

Lisa spent the 2004 season residing in Germany, racing for the now very successful Ghost International Racing Team, gaining a wealth of race & life experience, while helping to develop the shape of the team that was at that point just in its infancy. The busy season culminated in Lisa earning the only female spot on offer to compete for Australia at the Athens Olympic Games, where she raced home for a career best top 10 position.

In 2006, Lisa took a break from cycling and turned her hand to another passion. She became a successful DJ, in demand and entertaining crowds in both Brisbane and Sydney. However, this is one girl who has mountain biking in her heart and those who know her well know that there is nothing that will stop her getting on a bike. So, 2011 brought Lisa back to racing; itching to get back into the community she loved. However, her curiosity with the downhill discipline was at the forefront of this comeback.

With the support of the Brisbane riders she grew up with and the support of her local bike store, Planet Cycles, Lisa took the plunge to try the thrilling gravity ride. Receiving her bike only two weeks before the Mt Buller round of the Australian Gravity Cup, she took off to Victoria to mix it with the best downhillers in the country. Armed with a cross-country outfit, no armour, and a “No fear, One Speed” attitude Lisa attacked the side of Mt Buller like she had hardly been away from racing. An unfortunate mechanical, left her to roll the majority of her race run without a chain-ring, however, the experienced racer still managed to finish in 5th place.

The following round in Canberra, Lisa showed her racing experience would be easily transferred to her new found discipline, with her first podium finish only six weeks after riding a downhill bike for the first time - she placed second on the day. To round out the Gravity Cup and her introduction to her newfound discipline, Lisa won the final round and took third in the overall series.

Lisa has the experience, now she’s finding new ways of applying & challenging her skills and loving it. To this girl who packs up and travels to the far ends of the world to match it with the best, the future is so exciting.
